About Us

Originally established in 1964 under the name Stones Corner – Buranda Preschool and on the other side of Norman creek in Hanlon Park, Greenslopes, the building was moved to its current location after the floods in 1974. After its relocation and a name change in, it saw the now Stones Corner Community Kindergarten Incorporated become affiliated with the long established Crèche and Kindergarten Association of Queensland (C&K).

For over 50 years, the community based non-profit kindergarten which is run by a volunteer parent committee, has continually built strong relationships with the local community, children and their families and fostering environmental awareness through its connection with the local Brisbane City Council (BCC) Burnett Swamp bush care group and BCC Creek initiative and environment strategies.

Nestled on over 1,000sqm of leafy spacious land, with the added backdrop of the beautiful Norman Creek rejuvenation, you will find our long standing highly skilled educators playing alongside children in our natural playground. The kindergarten’s natural setting and added resources allows children to develop as they explore, get physical and connect with nature and friends. Our inclusive approved Kindergarten program is a play-based program designed and developed to meet government guidelines, the needs of each child and follows the C&K Listening and Learning Together curriculum to ensure children are school ready.

Our vision is to ensure each child develops a positive love of learning, care and respect for life, people and the environment.

Volunteering

The kindergarten is owned by the ‘Stones Corner Community Kindergarten Incorporated’ association, made up of members (current fee paying families and other financial members). The Kindergarten is managed by an annually elected parent committee of 12 positions, which coordinate the Kindergarten’s operations and together with staff, work towards achieving the Kindergarten’s goals.

Our Kindy relies on the our volunteer Parent Committee to help us run our wonderful Kindy. We couldn’t run our Kindy without them!

If you are unable to formally volunteer, there are other ways you can help. Please speak with one of our educators.

Active travel kindy

We are proud to be a pilot Kindy for Brisbane City Council’s Kindy Active Travel Program!

We encourage all our families to leave the car at home every Tuesday and Friday and try alternative active travel options such as walking, riding, scootering, public transport etc.

Kindy Active Travel is one of the easiest ways to incorporate physical activity into everyday life for all children. Research shows only 23% of Australian children are active for the recommended minimum of one hour every day.

We know that everyone is different, so there are many ways you can actively travel to kindy. How will you actively travel?

Walk
Leave the car at home and walk your kids to kindy. If you live too far away, drive part of the way and walk the rest. We call that ‘Park and Stride’.

Cycle
Ride with your children to kindy. It is legal to ride on the footpath and remember to always have your helmet secured.

Scooter
It’s fun to ride your scooter to kindy. Just like cycling, stick to the footpath and remember your helmet.

EVERY Tuesday and Friday are now Active Travel days at Stones Corner Kindy!

Brisbane City Council Creek Neighbours Project

We love being a part of the Brisbane City Council Creek Neighbours program. This program involves:

🌳 a Creek Workshop here at Kindy

🦎a Wildlife Ranger visit to Kindy

🐸 and a Creek Excursion

It is such a worthwhile program for the children to get to know what creatures live in our creek, how to look after their habitats, and how to stay safe around water.

Our environmental strategy

All measures have been taken to ensure the Kindergarten is as eco-efficient as possible.

Whether monitoring water and energy usage through audits, reducing our waste by encouraging families to send low/no waste lunches and using refillable water bottles. Any food and vegetable scraps are fed to the worm farm or composted. Where possible craft items are recycled boxes and paper rolls, supplied by families and local businesses. The Kindy also uses rainwater for play and watering the garden from our 2 rain water tanks.
